THE CAYE Belize has an extraordinary barrier reef and atoll ecosystem that is part of the Mesoamerican Reef System, the second largest reef system in the world. An atoll is a large lagoon with coral formations around its perimeter. Landmasses occur where the coral buildup is above sea level and plant life has taken root. The reefs then protect the beaches and coastal areas from erosion by dispersing the pounding waves. Lighthouse Reef atoll is the furthest atoll out from the mainland, approximately 45 miles east of Belize City. It is one of just four atolls in the entire western hemisphere. This coral paradise spans 27 miles in length and about eight miles wide. With its unique variety of marine life in such an untouched state, Lighthouse Reef is one of the largest and most outstanding examples of an atoll coral reef ecosystem. . Long Caye borders the southwestern side of Lighthouse Reef. Atoll. It is 2 1/4 miles in length, 3/4 miles at its widest point and approximately 650 acres. As the dominant landmass within Lighthouse Reef, Long Caye's protected lagoons and mangroves provide habitat for an abundance of tropical wildlife, such as breeding fish, rare birds, sea turtles and iguanas, to name a few.
Long Caye is also surrounded by magnificent walls of coral with a marine ecosystem that extends for miles. Minutes away are world-renowned Half Moon Caye bird sanctuary, the Great Blue Hole and some of the world's most pristine coral reefs and dive sites, including the Aquarium, Half Moon Wall and Cathedral.
